i just want to be correct about what to get before i get anything in order to get started with this. from what i read i need to get the receiver, the lnbf and a diseqc switch? and can i get them anywhere?

What IKS system are you trying to get? There are several.

i was thinking of getting a pansat with the lnbf and diseqc switch. is that what you mean by iks?

before you go and purchase anything for this hobby, it is recommended that you do significant reading, especially on the subject about Nagravison 3 encryption.. currently, there is nothing available from Bell or DishNet with conventional FTA boxes, unless you use IKS (Internet Key Sharing) - again, do some reading on that subject as well....

None of the fta boxes are running anything. A little more difficult to watch tv with the new Nagra3 running for dishnet and bev.
Oh, you will need a dish as well to attach that lnb onto.

What you need is to do some research on the hobby so you understand whats going on at this time.
Pansat is not a good choice unless you just want True FTA, You might want to start reading Just learning the terminology before doing anything will be a plus.

First of all, read read read.

What is available without IKS or without a subscription is limitted. There are a fair number of satellites that offer true free to air, but programming is pretty devoid of the major networks.

This translates to reading on all the various sites as to what is available and whether you want what programming is available.

The diseqc switch usually comes with a reciever, not always, but usually. You won't need it for a single lnb setup. If at a later date you install a second lnb/dish, you will then have a use for it.

Ha ha ha, might I suggest knitting. You can find all the supplies needed at walmart, instructions as well I'm sure. This would be perfect to keep yourself busy.
Or better yet, scrapbooking may be your hobby of choice, losts of different things to try, show to your friends,etc.

Lea, you have been here for a long time. You're new to this and you don't have a receiver or a dish yet? I'm not sure what answers you are wanting to hear. I suggest you do alot of reading...especially topics on true FTA.
