View Full Version : newbie - up and running on tv, but not computers
macmac 01-05-2007, 02:35 PM I've got a dreambox 500-S which is working on my tv, but I want to record to my computer, and control it from my laptop. Trouble is, my computers can't see the dreambox - I've tried using macs and pcs, no joy :-(
Set up:
dreambox --> linksys wired router --> DSL modem
macs (OSX) --> linksys wired router
PCs (winxphome/98/2000server) --> linksys wired router
ibook (OSX) --> usrobotics wireless router --> linksys wired router
laptop (winxphome) --> usrobotics wireless router --> linksys wired router
All computers have dedicated IP addresses, and I've given the dreambox its own i.p. In the setup window on the dreambox, I've given the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and the other two ip addresses I've given the ip address of the linksys router (192.168.1.1). I've checked the DHCP box, and the network box.
I can't telnet the dreambox or reach it via a browser, and I can't use the pc software that came with the box as I don't have a username or password (complicated, but I'd rather not contact the seller). I've tried 3 different mac software and they won't connect either.
Please can anyone help!?
While I'm chatting, what is an image? I assume it's not a picture, but I can't find any explanation. Is it like a disc image containing a program?
thanks in advance for your understanding and patience!

If you've checked the DHCP box and your ethernet cable is correct it should work. Did you select the Enable Network button.

User name is root, password is dreambox,

An image is the data thats stored on your dreambox. There are many image types such as Gemini, Nitro, DSM etc. You will need software (DreamUp, Flashwized etc.) to upload these to your box. If your using DreamUp your starting from scratch.

You should open the info forums for Dreambox and read a little bit though. Dreamboxes appear to be complicated but in my two years of DB Experience, there is always something to get it back up!
Good Luck

mundo121 01-30-2007, 10:46 AM you must turn off your firewall.
george80 02-04-2007, 06:09 AM You could try unchecking the DHCP in your box and set your dreambox ip to 192.168.1.40. Keep the Network option checked. This should fix your problem.
The username and password for the box as accurately stated by KPG is root and dreambox.
Use DCC and you should be able to record. Some platforms may not work well with webBrowwser in DCC. DSM 1.4 seems to be working well.
Hope this helps.
george80 02-10-2007, 08:10 PM Hi macmac,
Did you resolve the problem and how?
Just asking for the many future readers of this post.

palsat 05-29-2007, 02:34 PM I would recommend turning off dhcp and using a static ip. This will make it easier to chat with your db.

you need to go to DOS and see if they are talking to each other ie. your dreambox and the computer. You only have router IP and sub net which are correct.. now you need your IP for computer ..
at c:\PING 192.168.1.101 (if that is your IP) hit enter
you will see replying.. I believe 4 lines.. that is great
next type c:\ping 192.168.0._ _ _ whatever your last 3 digits are for your computer IP address hit enter... it will if it sees it say Replying... 4 times.. then c:\exit and enter
you are then talking from computer to dreambox.. now you know you are connected. Enjoy
good luck
rlbruderick 07-31-2008, 07:01 AM The guy that sold me the system set it up, it worked, and then he left.
I'm not fluent in his language, and I'd like to learn to do stuff myself.
But the next day, very few channels worked. So now I'm in student mode.
I'm using DCC v2.81 and it shows a RED connection line to the Dreambox.
What does that mean? I've searched the IP addresses, and they seem ok.
Do I need to do something with the 500? I'm able to download stuff with it.
jetpac2a 08-02-2008, 12:34 AM It is an address issue
all you addresses need to share the same exact 3 sets of numbers example:
Computer
192.168.2.3
DB
192.168.2.2
Router
192.168.2.1
If you use DCC and DB edit you will have to adjust the addresses to achive connection
The dB mac address is on the sticker on the bottom side of stb
you don't have to use that number it can be as the examples above
good luck
