For all of those who wish they has a serial port for updating receivers in their newer latop. Or you have a problem with a slow or non-performing USB to serial cable, try this:
For $20 at that famous online auction site delivered directly from Hong Kong:
1. An RS232 cardbus PCMCIA card.
2. It slides directly into the external card slot just like a wireless card.
3. To easily install, just slide it in the slot and then insert the CD-ROM driver.
4. It automatically installs the drivers in less than a minute.
5. It also comes with a small cable that is the external plug-in which connects from the card to your serial cable for updating.
6. It works exactly like a serial port; quickly and flawlessly.
7. One benefit is the portability of the laptop and another is a newer generation chip.
8. Beats any USB to serial cable in speed.
9. No need to spend $100, the $20 generic works great!

:) Well bob..I have to say I am very impressed and surprised with this..Only 10 ten day's from Hong Kong to Canada..and they did ship air mail envelope..they even declared it as a gift so i did not get hit with any customs charges:D
Best part is it works like a charm..I was considering the Belkin cable that was about double the price, but thought i would give this a try first..it worked out very well..I tried it on 3 different coolsats and all had the same transfer time of approx two minutes:wow: even my fast AMD Desktop takes 3+ with the serial cable.
Gotta say folks this is a great little piece of hardware..comes with a 4" or 5" CD driver disk..no problems installing drivers either..and a short 12" USB to serial cable..connect to your existing cable and you have all you need:D .
I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a solution for there Laptop over the existing USB to Serial cables.
P.S Thanks to xky11 for bringing this over.:)
Thanks Xky11 for the info.
I ordered one last night and they shipped it to me today. I paid $33 plus in Canadian funds. From what I read, I think I will like it.
I'll keep you posted as soon as I get it.
Thanks.:)

loire_laguna 02-17-2007, 08:39 AM got one of the rs-232 cards for my satellite a20 toshiba notebook... but it doesn't wanna work for me. tried it on the default settings on com1 and com 4 and no go. gives me a bad communications error in nagraedit 5.2 and the rom version and provider show up as gibberish when i try to reset the atr.. atr is good though.
the card is ok cause i have a usb to serial cable that works from time to time, but not too often.
any suggestions for settings to get my pcmcia rs232 card running? used the driver disc and the card installed itself after insertion.

dssnovice 02-19-2007, 05:07 PM For those who purchased a USB to Serial adapter, your slow speed is probably due to the baud rate. Most USB2Serial devices are installed with a default baud rate of 9600 bps. PCMCIA serial cards install at a more respectable baud rate of 115,000 bps. If you bump the USB2Serial baud rate up to the max (115,000 or 128,000 bps), you should get satisfactory transfer speeds.
For computer newbies, this is accomplished by going to [Device Manager] (either by right-clicking [My Computer] or via the [Control Panel]). Then scroll down and click on the [+] sign to the immediate left of [Ports].
1. Locate your USB2Serial device under [Ports] and RIGHT-click on it; select [Properties]
2. Under the [General] tab, make sure that the [Device Status] window indicates that it is functioning properly. If it is not, you should uninstall the device, reboot, and let Windows auto-detect the device. If it cannot locate the driver, you will be prompted to insert a driver disc
3. Click on the [Port Settings] tab and bump the port speed to the max (115200 or 128000 bps).
4. If you need to change the COM port assignment of the USB2Serial adapter to match one that your Loader program will support, click on the [Advanced] button (under the [Port Settings] tab) and change the [COM Port] value.
5. Be sure to sync or match the adapter's COM port assignment with one that the Loader program supports.
loire_laguna 02-22-2007, 11:01 AM i found this to not work on my laptop.. but worth a try for others before buying a laptop serial card which works great now

MaxSat 02-22-2007, 02:35 PM Try all of the other COM Ports in the loader if you are not getting any communication from the receiver. Mine is COM 5.
sp0iler 02-22-2007, 07:52 PM With the drivers and card installed in the slot
1-go to device manager
2-Scroll down to "Ports (Com & LPT)" and open the folder
3-Locate "PCI Communications Port Com (X)" and open the file
4-Cilick "Settings" and then Click "Advanced"
5-Chose an available port of your choice (mine is com1) and click okay.
6-Verify the change by right clicking on "PCI communications port" and choose "Scan for hardware changes".
7-You should now see "PCI communication port com (X)" where (X) is the com port of your choice.
Good luck,
Sp0iler
BTW-This also works for the USB to Serial/Com adaptor cable.I swear my cable speed is just as fast as my com hookup on my desktop.Maybe 90 sec. or so.Not sure what all the fuss is about.
satgirl34 02-27-2007, 09:34 AM Hi there, i had also purchased one of these r232's and so far i believe i have gotten all of my config's set up correctly on my laptop...only problem is every time i try to connect to receiver i keep getting the error message of flash fail update, seems like the product itself is working, the red and green lights go on and off....just says its downloading, but no data is coming through...any suggestions???? I would greatly appreciate it...thanks...
nikita 02-27-2007, 10:37 AM unfortunatly i do not mess with fta so i can not answer this question
if this question had something to do with how to run a unlocker, iso or powersyn, from the laptop, i could help you satgirl, but i have no idea about the fta, sorry i could not answer your question.
satgirl34 02-27-2007, 10:38 AM okay, i c...i thought that this was for laptop use for fta? am i sadly mistaken?
nikita 02-27-2007, 10:45 AM no this can be used for laptop with fta, but i just dont know how to use for fta, thats all....because i dont play with fta
satgirl34 02-27-2007, 10:51 AM oh, i thought so, but i cant seem to get rid of this dam flash failed error message, looks like it wants to run through, but doesnt....i am completely at a loss right now....thanks for your help though....:)
satgirl34 02-28-2007, 08:46 AM can the person who posted this laptop solution and pictured the equipment needed please reply to my thread; for i had gone out and bought this and now all i keep getting is a failed flash error message... and i need some help please.
dssnovice 02-28-2007, 05:50 PM 1. What is the COM port assignment of the PCMCIA serial card?
2. Have you confirmed that it is installed and functional (via [Device Manager]
3. Did you select the same COM port in the loader program?
4. Did you connect the correct type of serial cable between the male serial connectors on the PCMCIA card and the receiver
This information will help troubleshoot the problem you are having.
satgirl34 03-01-2007, 08:39 AM I am not too sure what the original assignment of the com port was to the pcmcia card for i had gone in there and changed it to com port 1, the same as my loader.
It is showing that is working and functioning properly in my device manager...
and i am not to sure about what cord i would then have to be using...from the male serial connection from my pcmcia card to the receiver...but i thought i had tried them all...
i even bought a null modem adapter, i placed it on the end of the male serial (from the pcmcia card to the) and then attached a db9 female to female and then hooked up to stb and nothing,
and i even tried...it without the null modem, going straight from my male serial (from the pcmcia card) with a gender adaptor to the stb, and nothing...
ANY IDEAS???? please
Im Lost 03-01-2007, 07:10 PM You may need to use a different loader for your FTA. Look in the files section and see if there is one with a different version than the one you are using.

xky11 03-22-2008, 04:28 PM you can also buy a USB to serial sr232 cable about 10-20 bucks at any pc store. as for you guys having issues with finding the right port for the FTA boxes in the loader settings you must select manual by default is automatic and then you can check every com port in the menu until you find the right one that you are using and yes this will work for any device that needs a sr232 meaning FTA boxes and ISO's for dish to say the least hope this helps and happy testing guys.
ootester 03-24-2008, 12:29 PM Xky11 is right i had to go thru about 4 before mine would work i think mine was com6 then it worked.
bella2 03-24-2008, 04:03 PM Hi, I've been at this all weekend and can't seem to get this right. I have the usb-serial driver installed , but when the wizard goes to install the software it tells me there it can't find the necessary hardware. the usb-ser in the device manager has a ! on it...can someone please tell me what it is that i'm doing wrong? Thanks.
xky11 03-24-2008, 07:11 PM ok if you bought the cable new from a store then you should had gotten a cd with the proper driver sounds like you letting windows trying to find the driver for you. if you have the disk all you do is open the cd in your cd rom and click on install driver and not by windows. this should install the driver for you for your new usb to serial cable and you should be fine after that. so when windows prompts you to find the driver cancel that and open the cd and install the driver by there.
ootester 03-25-2008, 05:51 AM Bella i believe there r other files u need that go along with the usb driver, i think there r 3 and it has to be in the same dir as usb drivers.
xky11 05-02-2008, 09:03 PM simple terms if you bought the usb to serial and you got a CD. when you plug up the usb to serial cable windows will prompt you to look for the driver hit cancel.
insert the cd provided with the cable and then go to my computer and the click on your CD Rom where the cd is located at. right click on that drive and hit explore or open to view files. there should be a file with exe at the end perhaps right click it and hit run. then just simply let it run to install and it should load the driver for you.
or you can also let windows try to find the driver for you but you must select choose driver/hardware from a specific location then select you CD rom thats has your driver cd and choose that. if you did it right then windows will oad the driver from the cd you have in the cd drive and you will be fine after that. let us know what have you done or tried you havent posted on this in a while.
alandcin 05-02-2008, 11:24 PM not all usb serial adapter cables will come with driver, i myself did not receive one with my purchase and had to find one, i found this driver and it is working like a champ with my cable. http://xxx.weavefuture.com/download/AK5-USBHL-340.zip make sure when installing driver that you choose a comport and only use that comport when using the cable for loading files...hope this helps

Fiera2 09-26-2008, 03:30 PM Can someone tell me if there is a need of some special setup for viewsat platinum. I got the card installed and the loader to recognized the card but when i try to send the file, it does not do anything. Turn off and on the receiver like when you are straight to a serial port.
Thanks
tonythetig 09-27-2008, 03:38 PM Fiera- none of my VS plats or my friends have a card-the newer plat lite doesnt even have a card reader. The easiest way to fix the plat is to download the latest file from the home page or members upload files in the forums page(next to last box) and click on viewsat from long list and locate the present file ending in a P for platium. Download it to your pc- I save it in my desktop- your choice or use a folder. You must open the file as its compressed. You can download the Loader2 program from this site. You really need to read all this as its on the site BUT I will try to help anyway. Open the Loader2 and click on open files and a list of files will appear- you might have to use the dropdown to choose from where the file is located first. When you click on the latest file it will appear in a box, click on the dated file and it will tranfer to the bottom of the box wich is over top the loader2- it will then transfer to the box saying :file name"- then click on open file and it will transfer to the top box of the loader2- have box plugged in and on but the main switch on back OFF- click on pc to stb and the turn stb on from the back again and it will start loading- YOU MUST have a null modem cable from pc to stb or it wont work- if you are using a laptop you will have to have the correct port number in the place it ask for when introducing the loader2 program. The file will load by percentage and show that on the front- AFTER it reaches 100% WAIT- then wait longer - wait until it goes thru some letters etc, says on and the channel you had on it appears, then turn it off again on the back. Close out loader etc and you are ready to watch tv IF your dish is pointed at the right birds and the box settings are as they need to be. Hope this helps BUT what you need to do is read, read and read some more, then after its easy to do- DONATE to the DSS Testers as they are the best site on the web. Remember you MUST have a null modem cable- even if its adapted to a serial port cable and when the file transfers to the loader2 box- its the top box IF its goes to the bottom box THEN the file isnt opend and wont load- you will get a failure note after you think its loaded. To, prior to starting and making sure box is On in the front, notice what channel number its on, so when the loading is complete you only see that channel numebr prior to turning the box back off on the back. Good luck.TonytheTiger
