Beijing secretly fires lasers to disable US satellites

China has secretly fired powerful laser weapons designed to disable American spy satellites by "blinding" their sensitive surveillance devices, it was reported yesterday.


The hitherto unreported attacks have been kept secret by the Bush administration for fear that it would damage attempts to co-opt China in diplomatic offensives against North Korea and Iran.

Sources told the military affairs publication Defense News that there had been a fierce internal battle within Washington over whether to make the attacks public. In the end, the Pentagon's annual assessment of the growing Chinese military build-up barely mentioned the threat.

"After a contentious debate, the White House directed the Pentagon to limit its concern to one line," Defense News said.

The document said that China could blind American satellites with a ground-based laser firing a beam of light to prevent spy photography as they pass over China.

According to senior American officials: "China not only has the capability, but has exercised it." American satellites like the giant Keyhole craft have come under attack "several times" in recent years.

Although the Chinese tests do not aim to destroy American satellites, the laser attacks could make them useless over Chinese territory.

The American military has been so alarmed by the Chinese activity that it has begun test attacks against its own satellites to determine the severity of the threat.

Satellites are especially vulnerable to attack because they have predetermined orbits, allowing an enemy to know where they will appear.

"The Chinese are very strategically minded and are extremely active in this arena. They really believe all the stuff written in the 1980s about the high frontier," said one senior former Pentagon official.

There has been increasing alarm in parts of the American military establishment over China's growing military ambitions.

Military experts have already noted that Chinese military expenditure is increasingly designed to challenge American military pre-eminence by investing in weaponry that can attack key systems such as aircraft carriers and satellites.

At the same time, China is engaged in a large-scale espionage effort against American high-tech firms working on projects such as the multibillion-pound DD(X) destroyer programme.

Several spy rings have been cracked and the FBI is increasing the number of counter-intelligence staff tracking the Chinese effort.

It seems governments always have a 'new and improved' enemy just over the horizon to maintain those levels of fear needed to justify putting more and more restrictions on our liberties.

we got better toys, we have a tactical laser weapon mounted on a 747 to shoot down ICBMs, in the late 90s TRW develpoed a tactical laser weapon, the program was called THAL, it was a joint project with isreal, they supplied the missles the US shot down, the first test was 1 target, the second test was 3 targets, after the second test they took the laser weapon and mounted on it on a 747, I saw a video of the first and second test where the US shot down 1 target and then 3 simultanious targets AT the TRW site then the THAL project was not not found in the TRW site anymore, if anyone finds any TRW/THAL tactical laser weapons project info please PM me the link, the TRW videos were awesome, the Laser weapon vaporized the target in like 1 or 2 seconds

I think a few of you are really underestimating what a threat China really is to the U.S. The next world war wont be fought against just a few small mideast countrys but will be fought against I believe china and russia.
Almost every chance China and russia get, they try to help anybody that is against us by providing our enemys with weapons and intel and setting up major investments in these enemy countrys.I Can believe that the Bush administration would hide the fact that chinese are shooting lasers at our sats just to get them to agree on iran.Wonder what would happen if we shot lasers to take out thier sats?:blink:

War with China is not in our or China's best economical interest, think of how much is imported from there to US and think how much yearly profit China will lose by fighting against one of its major consumers.

Ofcourse we were providing aid To whoever was against the soviet union.THEY WERE OUR ENEMY.After the collapse of the soviet union we bailled them out by providing billions of dollars Cause the new russia was in shanbles..My point is that they shouldnt be providing ANYTHING to our new enemys if they are suppose to be our allies now.As far as trade with china goes.If there is more terror attacks in the U.S and we find out that they are and have been supplying support and intel against us ,while claiming to be our Allies I would hope that we dont set back and do nothing.Atleast cut trade with them and bankrupt thier ass.IMHO
The reason we have these spy sats is because they cant be trusted.

And who's to say that the US government should be trusted, do you trust it? Why is it always the US who sticks their ass in a foreign conflict and then tries to dictate what's right and what's not? Why are the other international governments expected to agree with US on all its issues? Why didn't France, Russia, etc.. go into Iraq? Because they knew that it wasn't about any WMD's. US and Bush's administration deploys our troops so they can lose their life for what? Oil? Why is US controlling the possession of world's nuclear weapons, threatening other countries to destroy them or else, and yet not following its own preaching? Why are we so special? Who's to say that the president (be it Bush or the next monkey in a suit) doesn't push that "launch" button tomorrow and makes another hiroshima or nagasaki, just because of some ill feelings?

US government is controlled by a bunch of hypocrites who not only kill our own people in the name of "freedom" but also provoke other countries to hate us, which sooner or later escalates into more than just a few negative comments.

every communist in the world is a sworn enemy of free capitalist society. i mean EVERY. we are still having talks with n korea about the cease fire in the korean war. that war never ended, it was a cease fire. we had supplied the soviet union with mega tons of food and other supplies to keep them surviving. were they our enemy ? the fact that red china has shot laser beams at out satellites is an act of war. that is the reason you will not see this story in any major media. the major media is very sympathetic to communist regimes. the major media would not like to see communist china destroyed. they are our sworn enemy. red china could keep everything they export to the US. it would have no impact here.

Would the US tolerate spy planes over its sensitive high security areas? Of course not, why should it be different for any other country to defend itself.
