Step 1

Using radioshack's "USB to null modem" cable and original null modem cable which comes with DM , I hooked up laptop to DM.
Via windows hyperterminal, I went to Dreambox ADVANCED SETUP UTILITY and changed Network type to "Manual"
and
changed DM's IP to 192.168.0.24 In the same time, I hooked up regular ethernet cable from laptop's ethernet port to DM.

Step2

*Laptop*

ipconfig /all :
IP address.........192.168.0.10
Subnet mask........255.255.255.0
Default Gateway....192.168.0.1
DHCP Server........192.168.0.1
DNS Servers........xx.xx.xx.xxx
xx.xx.xx.xxx

Step3

*DM*
Setup>Expert Setup>Communication Setup:

IP: 192.168.0.24
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Type: LAN
Nameserver: 192.168.0.1
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Port: 80
"Enable Network" - checked(on)

Ngrab Streaming Setup:
Srv IP: 192.168.0.1

Shut DM's power off on back panel. Holding "Down" button, turn power back on. "Stop" and "192.168.0.24" appeared on the screen.

Step4

*Laptop*

cmd>ping 192.168.0.1 >>>>>>>good

cmd>ping 192.168.0.24>>>> bad. Sent 4 packets, lost 4 packets. Can't see DM at all.
If this is a cable problem, why can I communicate with DM using windows Hyperterminal? Plus, I also had an ethernet cable hooked up..

What's my problem?? All suggestions are welcome!!

Hello orasat!!!

The ethernet cable you are using must be a Cross Over type and not a regular straight cable.
Normaly cross over cable are colored ornage or red.
This is because you are conecting to your DM directly to the lappy.
Straight cables are used if your DM and lappy are connected through a router or lan switch.

You can communicate with hyperterminal or telnet cause then you are going through the null modem cable ...which is correct!!!.

If you latter want to send and recieve files from and to the DM using an FTP client proggy or made for DM "DCC ( dreambox control center)......you may want to change the setting on your DM to the IP of your Lappy.

on DM

Nameserver: 192.168.0.10 (your lappy)
Gateway: 192.168.0.10 (your lappy)

only if connected to a router ....then you would use the 192.168.0.1 IP!!!
This would also alow your DM to connect directly to the internet and down load files and plugins from image servers if available.
