NEW YORK -- Police confiscated about 40,000 bootlegged discs and scores of CD and DVD burners Thursday in raids that industry leaders called a significant blow to the nation's piracy market.

The Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America, both of which helped police, said authorities uncovered among the largest CD burning labs and movie pirating labs in the country.

One person was arrested. Abdouraitamance Diallo, 19, faces a charge of trademark counterfeiting, police said. A spokeswoman did not know if the suspect had been arraigned and a phone listing for Diallo could not be found Thursday night.

Police said they executed their first warrant at a garage, where they found 23 duplicator towers, similar to computer hard drive towers, containing more than 200 burners. The second search warrant was served hours later at an office where the 40,000 discs were found.

Police announced the arrest Thursday but declined to make a statement about the case, referring calls to the RIAA.

The RIAA said the alleged bootlegging group essentially acted as a wholesaler, capable of producing more than 6,000 CDs an hour, and sold the discs to people who would then peddle them in flea markets. It frequently changed its production locations and distribution centers, authorities said.

Among the films being illegally reproduced were some not yet officially released on DVD, including "Snakes on a Plane" and "World Trade Center." The music ranged from Latin to gospel.

"The more we can minimize the availability of pirate product, the more we help protect artists, record labels and everyone else involved in making music and ensure a positive, high-quality experience for fans," said Brad Buckles, executive vice president overseeing RIAA anti-piracy efforts.

The director of U.S. anti-piracy operations for the MPAA, Mike Robinson, said pirating operations thrive because consumers are willing to purchase their products.

"For us to eliminate this activity we really need to convince the public and cause them to think about what they're doing when they make those purchases," he said.

This means nothing the chinese have NYC locked down with dvds and cds for 4 bucks you can get a dvd or cd and for 20 bucks you can get 6 and that not even tire kicking them lol. there selection is great cds movies porn and kids movies. It is crazy how fast they can get the movies out. example movies comes out on friday by friday 1130 the little oriental girl is walking past where we sit for lunch with the movie. These movies are great for keeping the nagging old lady off your back about going to see a movie. But their is a down side most movies are great qulity all kids movies pornos and dvds that are out for sale in the store are copies of the real dvd. somtimes there is a problem with the dvds but she takes them with no question asked and lets you pick new or same movie. The quilty of the new movies is hit or miss but mostly they are good very rare to see peoples heads claping or other movie theather noise. The lady who I buy off of told my chinese speaking friend that they have warehouses filled with dvd and cds and that her alone in a 1 square mile in queens sells over 500 dvds, cds a day from 1000am to 4pm

Ugh watching a movie that someone taped in a theatre on a Sony HandiCam. Ha.

If your going to lower it to that poor of quality why not just download the torrent and rip the movie yourself and save the $4.

No one said you had to buy a new release to get DVD quality. You just need to know how to get them. The internet is a wonderful thing for those who use it to its fullest potential. Also how is not downloading for free worth. You download 10 movies you just saved yourself $40. Don't help the lazy bootleggers make money.

Why don't they lower the price of tickets and quit paying outrageous sums to actors ($20M per film).

The last two times I've gone to China I've brought back about 200 movies each time. I was worried about customs the first time but they didn't care. They only wanted to know if I had been on a farm or been around farm animals. I think that ws due to some disease outbreak at the time. DVDs in southern China are around fifty cents each. If the movie has been out for a few months the quality will be very good. If the movie is still in the theater it won't be good because it was probably taped from the theater or copied from a preview copy given to critics so they don't have to review the film in the theater.

One of the funniest DVDs I got was Lord of the rings 2. It had subtitles that were VERY badly translated. "Orcs" were translated at "Bitchmen". :wow:

You can get new DVD's for about 3 bucks in chinatown, but I don't bother with that, for the price I pay for my internet connection I get 20 DVD's a month on the average by simply using torrents.

the mpaa and the riaa troll the free bittorrent sites like torrentspy, it's better to join private trackers like bitsoup or demonoid, you will know whats crap and what's worth downloading, but with the private sites you must maintain a good ratio. nomar1955 many sites have faq's for you to read.

the pirate bay is well known for having movie right owners plan bogus torrents in an attempt to catch those who download them. I too stick to the private trackers, like the ones already mentioned, their torrents tend to be well seeded and the speeds are better than of public ones.

Didnt the pirate bay get busted by the sweedish cops a month ago...? I havent checked up on the site in a while, but I guess I kinda got scared off when I was reading about it.

I dunno if we are allowed to post links here (dont recall seeing a rule about external links) but just in case, google "arstechnica" and then do a search on the first page that pops up for the pirate bay... you will see the article. The site is a really reliable source for up to date tech news, good reads
