View Full Version : Primestar Dish for FTA
steveb78 08-02-2006, 11:32 AM I would like to hook up my old Primestar Dish up to catch some of the KU sats for my Pansat 2700A... Here is my question, how would I go about hooking up the Horizontal and Vertical? Would/Could I use the Disq switch?
Thanks...

try this and if it don't work i would suggest using a invacom qph-031 if you want to get more then linear
if linear is all you want there is some inexpensive lnbs out there
iluveitall 08-02-2006, 01:04 PM You can use a diseqc switch for both the vertical and horizontal. Here is one way to do it. I am going to use satellite G10R @123w as an example.
Hook up vertical to port 1 of your diseqc switch, hook up horizontal to port 2. Then go into antenna setup on your stb. You will need to add a new satellite called g10h. Assign g10r to diseqc port 1, then assign g10h to diseqc port 2.
You can do the same thing with any satellite you want to aim at. Also instead of adding new sats, you can use existing sat names. I only recommend adding a new sat to make things a little easier to keep track of.
Another thing you can do is use a 4x3 multiswitch, that will allow multiple recievers to see one satellite. Hook up the v side of the pstar LNB to the +13 port of the switch, hook up the h side of the pstar lnb to the +18 side of the switch. You can now hook up to 4 recievers to the output side of the switch. With a 4x3 switch you will not have to assign seperate satellites to h/v.
BTW, 4x3 switchs include a diplexer so you can also feed your OTA antenna into the switch. Use a diplexer per tv to feed the signal to the tv.
4x3 switch stands for 4 recievers hooked up to 1 hor, 1 ver and 1 OTA.
Good Luck
barabbas 08-02-2006, 01:45 PM I tried the diseqc switch trick and it didn't work, I use a 3x4 switch.
The primestar lnb I have needs power to both H and V at the same
time to work. There is actually a sticker on the lnb stating you must
apply 9v to H to get V to work.
barabbas 08-02-2006, 01:54 PM In a pinch you can carefully hook up a 9v battery to the H lnb connector,
+ to the center conductor and run the coax from the receiver to the V.
You will only get the V transponders, but at least you can get the dish
aimed until you get the 3x4 switch.
You can also use (for aiming) an sw21 with sat1 to V and sat2 to H. Again,
only the V transponders will work
When you get the 3x4 switch, V goes to +13v and H goes to +18v.
aussieboy 08-02-2006, 02:25 PM Let's hope that links are allowed, I didn't see anything in the rules forbidding it.
There is an excellent discussion of this topic at http://www.satelliteguys.us/showthread.php?t=71586 . I found it informative and so might you !

I havent seen one of those pstar lnbs yet, was not aware that they existed. I have been using the tricks i described above for a while, with my 2 pstar dishs. From now on I will be more carefull what i advise and check with the original poster to make sure they do not have an LNBF like yours ;) Thanks for the input :D

Invacom makes a LNB that will match right up to the pstar feedhorn. The flange on the feedhorn is a c-120 flange. I believe the part# for the invacom LNB is qpf-031. Cost is kind of high though.
This LNB is nice because the pstar feedhorn is matched to the dish. If you use a normal LNBF, the LNBF will not be fully illuminated by the dish, which might cost you a few points of signal quality.
If you dont want to spend the money for the invacom, you can still use a standard LNBF. You will have to take the plastic outer casing off of the LNBF, then you can fit the LNBF right into the 20mm neck of the pstar LNBF holder.
jefferylackey 08-02-2006, 04:05 PM i just did what you're wanting to do just this last weekend.. it was a booger getting the satellite "galaxyG10r" locked it. after about an hour i got it though... you don't need the horizontal side of it, there are only 2-3 channels on it and they're nothing you'd want to watch, there are however somewhere around 35 channels on the vertical side. i've deleted everything except the english speaking ones... left me with 17 channels....i've got mine hooked up to a disqec switch.... settings i used are as follows....
.....
transponder to look at for signal strength....11800
lnb frequency 9750/10750
22Khz off
legacy off
just tell it which disqc port and get to tweeking.....
captiveworks cw600 didn't find the name of the satellite and i thought it wouldn't work but it did... did a blind scan and got them all.... there's some good tv on there, a couple retro tv's.... some locals....beats nothing.. or just a few locals.....was well worth the work.... good luck.
jonwin 08-02-2006, 04:15 PM i used to install primstars. all power goes into V. i hooked power to H to see what would happen? it burned out my diseqc switch. i get most of my channels only using V. i don't have a 3/4 switch to try out. i am switching over to invacom lnbs on my four primestar dishes. they work great. at thirty $ a pop invacom fit perfectly on primestar dishes.
barabbas 08-02-2006, 04:33 PM I have the primestar 1 meter dish with the NJR2118F lnb.

dixieporter 08-02-2006, 04:42 PM old primestar 40in dish is great with universal LNB. around 20 bucks. so much easyer to site in.
steveb78 08-03-2006, 02:48 AM All information provided is very informative! This is definatly something I'll be hooking up ASAP!
Where I'm at, I have had issues with getting a signal from 110 and 119 from a regular DN dish, so I had to put a DTV dish in the middle of the yard pointed at 110 and a DN DP dish further back to catch 119... so I plan to move the P* dish a little beyond the 110 dish in the yard, and try to use the DN DP dish to catch 110/119 as well. (I live in an area with alot of trees).
I'll keep ya posted on the progress...

yo8bps 08-03-2006, 04:00 AM Good luck ! Any other sats. worth looking at ???
steveb78 08-03-2006, 05:27 PM While we're on the subject of lnbs... what brand of lnb came with the P* dish? I took mine off the oval dish awhile back to store it, and it doesn't have a brand name, just a model number...
NJR2119F
S/N 191645617
Any ideas on brand name or where I could get info? I'm about to google it to see what comes up...
**Edit Begins Here**
OK... I came across this site for Primestar dish conversions:
hxxp://www.winnfreenet.com/primestar.html (replace the xx with tt)
Enjoy!

Well if you like wildfeeds try IA6.
iluveitall 08-06-2006, 10:10 AM I like AMC 3, there are 3 PBS feeds (actually 4, but 1 duplicates) on that sat, you will need AC-3 to pick up two of them. Also Amazonias has some good stuff, as does IA5.
