View Full Version : Coolsat 5000 - receiver went dead
dieselgg 01-22-2006, 03:05 PM For some reason or other my receiver went dead on me. When I turn it on, there is no clock or dashes .. absolutely nothing, just a very faint illumination of the led for "remote". When it should show the screen on the tv, it is black.
This was not due to a power outage or brown-out. I removed the coax connections from the back and turned it off and how to go on the roof. When I came back and turned it on, it was dead.
I did some basic troubleshooting at the input state onthe circuit board and the fuse is okay.
Any suggestions???

is there still faint illumination ? or is completley dead ?
did you try plugging in your box to another outlet on another circut ?
dieselgg 01-22-2006, 03:20 PM When I turn it on, there is only a very faint illumination of the 'remote' LED in the front and nothing more. I plugged this into different outlets and the same thing and of course there is no detection of the receiver when trying to detect through loader.exe.

?? Yikes !! you cant even flash it back then , guess asking about a receipt is out of the question !
you seem to have the ability to to basic trouble shooting on circut boards, i don't ! can you trace it any farther ?
have you attempted to jtag it (not that much is known at this point about jtaging the 5000) but curious if maybe you mite be able to read anything off the tsop ?
i am no eletricial genious , but is there a pre fuse, b/4 the big one on the board ?
i will look around for a answer to this one , maybe i can find a schematic as well for the board
good luck :)
dieselgg 01-22-2006, 03:41 PM I have another working coolsat 5000 and I used the same script on it. It was working fine after the script load. I checked the fuse and it is okay.
I checked the voltages on the connector that goes from one pcb to the other pcb and noticed that the only voltage I am not getting anything is the 7.5V. My the LCD display on my fluke meter has dimmed out over the years so I cannot accurately read it, but based on the other measurements something is wrong with the 7.5V, the other voltages are okay.
I will go back to the other post. Perhaps these clues will turn a ligh bulb in someone's head.
papa J 01-22-2006, 05:37 PM I just got a new 5000 , it has a problem, remote will not do all functions, i called the seller he said he was having a problem with about 50% of the last bunch of silver 5000's that he recieved from his supplyer. could this be your problem?
dieselgg 01-22-2006, 05:40 PM Basically, when I power up the receiver, there is no clock , the LCD screen is black except for the faint illumination of the "remote" LED.

After what i read in here looks like u have done everything but Jtag it. so like Sunker say try to jtag it and u might find the problem. looks like u are not getting enough juice to the reciever. The other option send it back to the seller and he probably send you a newone.
Oh i did got a Coolsat 5000 like 15 days ago and i did not have anyproblem with the remote. so for those that have a remote problem. Did u guys check the battery?.
dieselgg 01-23-2006, 03:49 PM Would anyone know if trying to do an autoscan even though you are not aligned with any dish would lock up the receiver.
I loaded the 113 file, everything was fine after that. I decided to do an autoscan hoping that I had locked onto a signal with my dish on the 61.5. When it did not find anything, I shut it off, then unhooked the coax. Tried to realign the dish again, hooked up the coax cables, then when I turned the unit on it was dead.
There has to be a coolsat repair manual out there. I called this one place and they are not an official repair centre. The are waiting for coolsat 5000 parts and the estimated my repairs to cost about $60 - $80 canadian.
I don't think anyone has done a JTAG on a 5000 yet.
remigrav 01-24-2006, 05:52 PM I have a new coolsat 5000. Batteries were dead for remote out of the box. Receiver works fine. I've been told that this recever is not hi def. and that the diseq doesn't last very long with this receiver. I'll be watching the posts Thanks in advance and I am pleased I chose this one.

Can anyone enlight me on this. Is there are any FTA IRD out there that is actually Hi Def? I really wanna know about this to get me one.
An a bit of advise install the Diseqc inside ure house, This switch does not like humidity or cool weather at all. I found this out the hard way lol
DEBUGG 01-26-2006, 01:21 AM Sounds like the power supply in your 5000 has shut down. Have heard of this before because of improper connections to the lnb input on the receiver.
dieselgg 01-26-2006, 01:17 PM I have checked out the power supply board and someone is currently trouble shooting the other board in the receiver. He is suggesting that there may be a short on the board. I was told that disconnecting any of the coax inputs while the receiver can damage it. I have never heard of this but I cannot recall if this happened.
On another site, someone mentioned that while they were watching TV, the receiver just died and exhibited the same symptoms as my receiver.
We'll see what happens.

I also lost power in my reciever in the middle of watching TV. It just went dead. I was looking for fuse but could't find it.
Anybody with any information please post it......
RoofRabbit 03-19-2006, 03:52 AM Whenever disconnecting the lnb coax or connecting it, it's best to turn the switch on the back of the coolsat off first. That would kill the lnb power and eliminate the short circuit risk.

Did you try turning the switch in the back OFF, then ON again?
Steve from NY
I have also had my CS5k cut off and go dead. All I did was switch the on-off switch off for a few seconds and then back on and everything was fine. Good Luck bro.
