They are pretty much all the same form what I have seen. Just be sure it is at least 18mhz

I would recommend the Gold Atmega 128 with 18.000 Mhz. crystal and programmer for $35. (plus shipping) from dsshouse.
That ought to help you get started with Atmega. I have several, you only need one prorammer for all of them, just so you know.
These guys are in China, but ship FAST.
Shipping's a bit pricey, get others to order stuff with you and split the shipping.
I recommend them because I've gotten some great items from them in the past.
