If you connect a continuity tester to each pin at both ends of your cable one at a time (ie. 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc.) and you have a complete circuit for all nine conductors then you have a straight cable. If it's not straight through then map the pin to pin on your cable to determine what type of null modem cable it is. Mark the ends 1 and 2 so you don't get mixed up. Google 'db9 null modem pinout' for numerous charts and diagrams to id your cable.

To the naked eye, the cables look identical...the null crosses pins 2 and 3..radio shack sells both or adapters to convert from 1 to the other..
