View Full Version : Double your browsing speed

Without sounding like too much of a fanboy I would like to take a quick minute to explain something that has improved my surfing experience ten fold. In fact if you tell me your browsing of this site or any other is not twice as fast, I will openly berrate you in public.

Amazingly Internet Explorer actually renders most websites very poorly and slower than a Mozilla based browser like Firefox. When you compare the two it is very clear. Firefox renders data as it is parsed meaning the page you are viewing is displayed as it comes in, in realtime. IE digests a lot of the pages content before it displays anything. This results in a delay in displaying the content. You can test this out on this forums home page very easily. The difference is really noticable.

More reasons to try FF today are:

1. Less adware/malware targets Firefox than IE.
2. It leaves a smaller footprint in memory.
3. Tabbed windows! :yes:
4. It looks damn cool.
5. Did I mention it is hella faster?
6. Awesome community crafted plugins.
7. FREE!

There is no conspiracy. Firefox simply provides a vastly improved experience. That's it that's all.

....and that's why I've used Firefox from the get go. IE really does suck ass guys. Face it, macroscam's browser sucks by comparison. There are all kinds of freeware plug in's to go with Firefox too that will enhance your surfing. If you havn't already, try it. You'll like it.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I'd have to find it again... the app... but if you have a mem stick... you can take your FF with you. There is a version that will run off your jump drive and it keeps all your histories etc. so when using a public or someone elses computer, it leaves no trace of where you have been or done :) Maybe someone else has it... I had to redo my box a few weeks ago and lost the link to the proggy

I prefer the Firefox over IE as well. How ever I do use both.

For some reason, which also include's perforamace of such, Firefox has IE beat hand's down in my opinion.

Chow for now

I also prefer firefox over IE since its way faster, tabbed, looks better, better extentions, and easier to use in my opinion, fire fox is all and all the best browser out there in my opinion

Some sites with store fronts require you use IE for their secure order page. For general surfing purposes though, Firefox is gonna be a way better option in almost all instances.

on my win machines,, it's Firefox all the way,, it's just plain better (but not without it's security problems and glitches)....
I prefer Safari on my mac though.. advantages??
fast,tweakable, tabbed browsing, and there is no worry about those wierd worms and trojans entering in from those questionable sites..

I don't do toolbars, so I can't help on that. But, you can have both browsers loaded on you computer and simply use the one you want. I am a forever FireFox user but I still use IE for a few pages that just are not hanndled right by FF. The tabbed browsing would make FF the hands down winner, even it wasn't for the speed.:wow:

Here is some help for you FF guys that will give more speed and increase performance. I ran across this somewhere several months ago and saved it.

Type “about:config”, without the quotes of course, into the address bar and hit return. scroll down until you find the settings that you want to change. These are for all types of computers and connections. Find yours and adjust away.

Fast Computer is greater than 1.5Ghz CPU and atleast 512MB RAM
Fast Connection is DSL or cable or better.

Common to all configurations

These are the settings that seem to be common to all configuration files regardless of connection speed or computer speed with a couple of additions - plugin paths can be found with about : plugins and the bookmark menu delay is turned off.
CSS:
/* Speed Tweak - Common to all Configurations */
user_pref("network.http.pipelining", true);
user_pref("network.http.proxy.pipelining", true);
user_pref("network.http.pipelining.maxrequests", 8);
user_pref("content.notify.backoffcount", 5);
user_pref("plugin.expose_full_path", true);
user_pref("ui.submenuDelay", 0);

Fast Computer Fast Connection
CSS:
/* Speed Tweak - Fast Computer Fast Connection */
user_pref("content.interrupt.parsing", true);
user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 2250000);
user_pref("content.notify.interval", 750000);
user_pref("content.notify.ontimer", true);
user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 750000);
user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 48);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 16);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 16);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 8);
user_pref("browser.cache.memory.capacity", 65536);

A couple settings of note - Firefox is allocated 4096 KB of memory by default and in this configuration we give it roughly 65MB as denoted by the last line. This can be changed according to what is used.

Fast Computer, Slower Connection

This configuration is more suited to people without ultra fast connections. We are not talking about dial up connections but slower DSL / Cable connections.
CSS:
/* Speed Tweak - Fast Computer, Slower Connection */
user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 2250000);
user_pref("content.notify.interval", 750000);
user_pref("content.notify.ontimer", true);
user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 750000);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 48);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 16);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 16);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 8);
user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);
user_pref("browser.cache.memory.capacity", 65536);

Fast Computer, Slow Connection
CSS:
/* Speed Tweak - Fast Computer, Slow Connection */
user_pref("browser.xul.error_pages.enabled", true);
user_pref("content.interrupt.parsing", true);
user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 3000000);
user_pref("content.maxtextrun", 8191);
user_pref("content.notify.interval", 750000);
user_pref("content.notify.ontimer", true);
user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 750000);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 32);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 8);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 8);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 4);
user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);
user_pref("browser.cache.memory.capacity", 65536);

Slow Computer, Fast Connection
CSS:
/* Speed Tweak - Slow Computer, Fast Connection */
user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 3000000);
user_pref("content.notify.backoffcount", 5);
user_pref("content.notify.interval", 1000000);
user_pref("content.notify.ontimer", true);
user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 1000000);
user_pref("content.maxtextrun", 4095);
user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 1000);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 48);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 16);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 16);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 8);
user_pref("DOM.disable_window_status_change", true);

One of the changes made for this particular configuration is the final line where the status bar is disabled for changing web pages to save processor time.

Slow Computer, Slow Connection

We have entered the doldrums of the dial-up user
CSS:
/* Speed Tweak - Slow Computer, Slow Connection */
user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 2250000);
user_pref("content.notify.interval", 750000);
user_pref("content.notify.ontimer", true);
user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 750000);
user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 750);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 32);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 8);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 8);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 4);
user_pref("DOM.disable_window_status_change", true);

Another Tweak
CSS:
/* Speed Tweak - Another Tweak */
user_pref("network.dns.disableIPv6", true);

Hey Guys ; I bow to experience and have downloaded FF, but not used it yet because I am using my first puter(7/05), and learning testing, which leaves me very little time to evaluate, in fact I`ve messed my sh1t up and had to pay to get fixed twice so I`m a little gun shy. I`m not stupid, but neither am I the sharpest knife in the drawer. As soon as I finish this beer I`m gonna take the plunge. The reason I have trepidations is I`ve already fahqed up IE once and had help fixin, so here goes, I know I now have help, and its a good feeling, you guys and gals are great!!!

Fire fox is the only way to go no tracking cookies and it is faster but it will use up alot of memory If you download and add all of the plugins I just run the weather and the custom skin plugins. And no more. I rarely use IE just because it is inferior. And I belive Microsoft overlooks ad ware because they get PAID! Just my personal beliefs.

just a bit of information, theres programs that can make IE run that fast, its an easy trick. 1 way is to keep the http crap of each site on a list so that it doesnt have to go back n forth asking the site b4 it starts downloading it, i had 1 of these programs a long time ago and i was BLOWN away. Lost it though with a reformat and forgot what its called. Can find 1 easy with a thread where I get all my links for eMule.

This might not be a bad thing, as you still get the Preggo girl! :D

As a side note, the person who codes the web page has to make sure that it works for all of the web-browsers that they 'think' will access it - From working on the one at work -- sometimes it is hell to get all of the browsers to show everything, so you sometimes have to compromise and just go with the ones that you think are the most popular.

Another alternative is to use Maxthon browser. It is built on the IE platform, however incoroporates many new features such as tab browsing. The only limitation is it does not allow 3rd party tool bars such as Yahoo or Google. I have been using this browser for about a year (even when it was still called myIE2) and could not imagine going back to standard IE. The addres for it is www.maxthon.com.

Hope this helps
