View Full Version : How To Create a Patch

I have been asked on several occasions, how do you write a patch for a Rom card? I thought I would write something up that was a step-by-step procedure so everyone who was having a little difficulty in doing it could maybe get a pointer or two from it. Here goes.

The first thing to do, if you have not already done it, is to download the MiniRTM program, the NagraEdit program V4.1 (NagraEdit V1.1 if you have a Rom-2 card), and the latest blocker. Once you have these three things, you are ready to begin a fairly simple process as long as you keep your mind on what you are doing. These programs are very easy to use as long as you don't get intimidated by them. This isn't rocket science so quit thinking you can't do it. Trust me, you can almost do it with your eyes shut.

The first thing we will do is to create the tiers for the channels you want to watch. Open the MiniRTM program. (I am using V2.5 and I believe it's the newest one, but I am not positive) The first thing to get to know, is on the left side of the screen you will see "Settings" and underneath that you will see "Rom Type". Now put check marks in the appropriate places for what you want to do, I am assuming you want it for Dish, and then check the type of card you have.

Okay, that is done. Now we need to add some channels. Just to the right of the boxes you just checked, you will find a whole bunch of channels to choose from. Check the AT60, AT180 and the AT120. These will give you the bulk of the regular channels that most people subscribe to.

That wasn't so hard, was it? It might be interesting to notice here, that just to the right of the boxes you are checking, you will see some numbers. Look familiar? They should. They are the satellite numbers from where these channels are coming from. So if you see some numbers there from a satellite that you don't pick up, it doesn't do you much good to check that box because you won't get that channel anyway. And you thought this was hard. Piece of cake.

Next come the networks, East and West Coast. Check the one you want, check them both if you want to. After that comes HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc. Check the ones you want, check them all if you watch them, but if you don't watch them, don't check them. There is no point in activating channels that you don't watch anyway. Continue on down the list checking the channels/packages you want until you get to end, where it says LOCALS and then STOP.

You can scroll down this list of channels if you want to, it will have a ton of channels that can be found on the different satellites, and you can even put a check mark by any channels you would like to get, provided you can pick up that satellite. In most cases, that will be the 119 and the 110. But the channels you have already chosen will most likely be the ones you want to watch.

Now for some PPV channels. You can add these channels now, or you can make a separate PPV patch later. Doesn't really make a big difference, either way they will be added to the card. The way this works is like this. Click on the PPV button. A new box should pop up. The box will be the called the PPV String Analyzer/Editor and will have all sorts of numbers all over it. Don't panic, it's no big deal, most of the stuff we won't even mess with.

On the right side of numbers, toward the bottom, you will find two lines that say, "Lowest PPV ID" and "Highest PPV ID". Just what do these mean? Well, it is quite simple. Turn your TV and your satellite dish on. Using the guide, go to a PPV channel and then click "Info". You will see a description of the PPV show and you will find a 5 digit number that you will have no idea what it is. Here is what this number is going to do for you. You go to all the PPV channels you want to get and you write down all the 5 digit numbers that you find listed. Then taking a piece of paper and pencil, you list the numbers in numeric order and you figure out which is the lowest number and which is the highest number. These numbers will be the high and the low numbers which you can punch into these two spaces. The larger the span between these two numbers, the greater the chance you will get hit with an ECM.

If you do not want to change anything on this screen, that is okay. Check the box on the right where it says "No Porn" if you don't want the porn channels. Then click the "Create Random" button on the far right. This will create a PPV string which will allow you to watch all the PPV channels. Now click "Use this" which is located on the bottom of the screen.

Now for the local channels. To get the local channels you want, you need to be in the spotbeam and be able to pick up the correct satellite, or the locals need to be broadcast all across the country on either the 119 or the 110 satellite. With that in mind, on the far left, under the "Add IRD Info"you will find a button that says "Dish Remapping". Click the button and another screen will pop up. Check the appropriate city that you live near to get the local channels from that city. This will give you the locals in the channel 2-99 area where they would appear on regular television. Once you do that, close the box.

Now all you need to do it to click on the "Create ... Patch" (you will see ne2 or ne3 etc depending on the card type you told the program you have) A box comes up and asks where to save the patch. Save it wherever you want to, but pick a place you will remember, like to a floppy disk in the "A" drive.

Now all you need do is start NagraEdit, and clean the card. You may want to clean the card more than once, many people recommend doing that. After the card is cleaned of all the previous programming and blocker, then read the card. Once you read the card, the clean card image will be ready for a patch. Just apply the patch to the image and then apply the blocker. Once that is done, write the patched image to the card. Then try to read the card and if the blocker is applied correctly, it should say back door is closed and the Rev should be spoofed to Rev 383.

That's it, you are done. Put the card into the receiver, turn it on, wait a few minutes while it aquires the satellite, get yourself a cold beer, and you should be watching TV.

I will re-word that a little. Clean the card. Then read the card. Then apply the patch to the clean card image. Then apply the blackout fix to the card image. Then apply the blocker patch to the card image. After that, write the whole thing to the card. Then try to read the card and if the blocker is applied correctly, it should say back door is closed and the Rev should be spoofed to Rev 383.

Damn good post Bob. This is the kind of step by step most of us need....lol. I have got the rom3 and the atmegas down pat but I am having trouble with the rom 10 card. When you make your tiers (whether it be with tier gen or minirtm...etc.) and save it as an ep3...10 and open nagra and test and run the ep10 patchs (assuming no errors) and try to save the ep10 image (which should end up a .bin file) wont let me save it as a .bin. Im sure this is operator error but would like to know what Im doing wrong. Thanks for your knowledge and patience.

I am not sure why that happens. I have a Rom-10 card, but it is locked at Rev A23 so I can't unlock it. If I could I would try to get the results you did and then make an attempt to figure out what was wrong. But I can't do that because I don't have a Rom-10 card to try it on. Perhaps someone else can answer your question.
