View Full Version : Is DVB-S legal to own ?
Longjohnxx 05-24-2004, 01:58 PM Hi,
I am a newbie to this, Is there a chance that Dave or BEv can sue you for buying a DVB-S? can anyone tell me a save method to buy without being track by credit card or mailing address?
Morbidfury 05-24-2004, 05:22 PM Hi,

Yes it is leagal as of right now to buy a DVB-S system as they are used to get FREE TO AIR channels. It is illegal to modify the programing or characteristics of these items to get encrypted channels (Would we do that?)
So feel free to visit a reputable site that has them to offer.
I suggest (For the blackbird reciever) dsscanada.ca, a little high on the price but gives support and is secure.
eagl1234 05-25-2004, 08:53 AM If you buy a blackbird or siverbullet. by its very claims it contains illegal code.
Therfore it must be illegal. Therefore the site of purchase must be suspect. Please tell me if I'm wrong about this. Buying a fortec is legal if you purchase from a site that does not also sell units as blsckbirds or siverbullets.
If you want to go the FTA route.
1-Only buy a totaly legal system
2-Buy from a dealer that only sells totally legal systems
3-Pansat2300a and Coship5300b are tried and true Receivers.
4-The both are easy to test with out the need for cards.
4-Receivers come in two flavors - With and without CI
CI is a receptacle for a CAM. CAM is an eeprom and receptacle that takes a card.
5- CAMs that are legal are irdeto and nagravision
6- The LNB that works for FTA is different then Dave/Charlie/etc. LNB
7- The recomended dish size for FTA is 30 inch
8- both dave/charlie LNB and FTA LNB can mount on same dish using a flex block.
9- another way to get FTA and test is simply putting sat card in 2000MH+ computer.
10- the Internet has answers to any questions about testing the above.
11- a cheap PC in every room LANed. One with a sat card and a streamer = TV/DVDR/PC in every room = Heaven!

Longjohnxx 05-25-2004, 10:26 AM Thank you both Morbidfury and Eagl1234, Also what do you guys think about using an existing standard 18" DirectTV disk mounted on a SG3100 H-H motor? would that be better choice than switching to D*Net Dish500 fixed to 110 and 119 bird on sky?
me2003 05-25-2004, 12:35 PM use a dish 500 but make sure the lnbs dont have the built in switch,
they will not work with a dvb card with the switch
DN is installing a Dish500 for me tomorrow. How can i find out or how do i ask him to not install lnbs with build in switch?
comtech 06-15-2004, 04:30 PM DN is installing a Dish500 for me tomorrow. How can i find out or how do i ask him to not install lnbs with build in switch?
you're kidding right-that guy will report you asap-just remove them later and get a disceqc sw
yeah lol. Kimo your looking to get a free ride to jail.
The person that installed my satellite was a contractor, he installs for DN and DTV. He told me that he has DTV and DN at his house. I hinted to him whether he can do anything with the p4 card. He said he doesn't know what i'm talking about. That was the end of the conversation.
dishmonkey 06-16-2004, 10:23 PM Wow you like playing with fire. That is really not a wise thing at all.... Why give the chance of being flagged. It wouldn't be to far off of DN or DTV means to have guys talk about illegal means of receiving signals to get a customer talking. I mean they raid shops selling loaders and mail off 170,000 letters not to mention thousands of pay up letters.... Your crazy man...LOL

I'm a paying customer for both DN and DTV. Once the HU went down, i'm getting legit DTV with the p5. So technically, i'm not doing anything wrong :). Plus everyone and their mother are wondering if the p4/p5 can be cloned or hacked (p4 forum). There are so many rumors going around. Just thought i would try to find out first hand.
dishmonkey 06-17-2004, 03:12 PM Your just totally missing the point here but thats okay. Just give Dishnet a call or Directv and ask for their "hacking" department and ask if they know of any hacks yet or when to expect them. Maybe even posted an ad in your local newspaper. I hear they have a bunch of locals in a few cities that get together and try to open up the cards. Hope these suggestions help.... ;)
comtech 06-17-2004, 05:43 PM never trust any agent[installer] of DTV or DISH-these guy's get bonus points for turning in suspected hacker's [i'd do it too- if i were them]let the guy install system and play dumb-what you do on your property after they leave is your own biz
ghitch75 06-22-2004, 06:25 AM 2 old dtv dishs will work just fine with a diseqc switch
