First you will need to connect an external hard drive no larger than 500gb to the receiver. I use a Maxtor 1 Touch 320 gb and it works great. You will need to format the hard drive with the receiver. This is easy to do....with the hard drive connected and powered on, with the remote, follow this sequence...menu>utilities>usb>format. It should be pretty quick in formatting the hard drive....

Then to program a recording, follow this sequence....menu>system setting>timer manager. Press the green buton to add a timer. Then put in the info that is needed to set it to record.

Then after it is recorded, to play it back, follow this sequence....menu>utilites>USB>play list. Select the file that you wish to play back. Use the top circle of control buttons on the remote to control the PVR functions the same as you would on a vcr.

note....with the hard drive connnected you can use the top set of control buttons to pause, rewind and replay live tv....just play with them, I think you will like it...

another note....when you connect the hard drive and leave it connected, you may want to set the receiver to auto detect the hard drive...to do this, follow this sequence...menu>utilities>USBconfiguration>auto detect. The only hassle to doing this is, if when you have a hard drive connected to one of the usb ports (I use the back one for my hard drive) the receiver will not recognize the other usb port when you insert a usb stick to load another file. You will have to follow the menu>utilities>usb>configuration steps, set the receiver to see which port you are trying to load the file from, insert the usb stick, load the file then go back into the menu and reset it to recognize the port that your hard drive is connected to. If you do not set it back, the time shift and PVR functions will not work.
