While prospecting for diamonds off the coast of Namibia, De Beers geologists uncovered an ancient shipwreck and a veritable treasure trove of copper ingots, gold coins, and elephant tusks. The ship apparently sank in rough weather 500 years ago and is believed to be the oldest shipwreck ever discovered in sub-Saharan Africa. The ship’s origin and the identities of the crew members—whose remains were found among the wreckage—remain unknown, but the discovery may be linked to Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias, who went missing in 1500 after becoming the first European seafarer to round the Cape of Good Hope.
